Shortly after Gail left her corporate career to become a writer, and Art turned his full-time attentions to painting, the couple realized that they could live, literally, any where in the world. The Rand McNally World Map became a permanent fixture on their kitchen table as they considered where they should permanently drop anchor.
New Zealand's South Island, Northern Italy, Provence and various locales in Canada were each discussed at great length. But, after all the pros and cons were weighed, their desire to stay relatively close to friends and family, along with their sense of patriotism and attachment to the US reduced their search to the 'lower 48' states. Towns across the country, from Portland, Maine (close to Art's hometown) to Medford, Oregon were considered and even visited.
And then a serendipitous turn of events had Art and Gail on a business trip to upstate New York during the second week of January in 2006. During a ferocious snow storm, they both realized they had 'found home'.
It took close to another year for Gail and Art to find the perfect piece of land on which to build Lazy Goose Farm, but they finally came upon their paradise; forty wooded acres with a stream running through it, ponds and a two-hundred year old stone wall. With views of the Catskills, Adirondacks and Vermont Green Mountains, they fell in love with every aspect of the property as well as the small town a few miles down the road.
After spending several months excavating a 1/3 mile driveway that leads to the center of the property, they started the building process with a simple barn and hay loft. After that was completed, they immediately brought in "livestock" by adopting Camille, a fine cat, to watch over the barn.
Next in priority were the raised vegetable beds and then a small art studio where the couple lived for several months while the construction of the main house was wrapped up. Once Gail and Art moved in to their home, where Gail types away in her office, they built Studio2 where Art now spends most of his days.
So, how did the name Lazy Goose come about? After tossing around a few possibilities, they stumbled upon it as a variation of the expression "silly goose" which Gail frequently calls the pets, and, on occasion, her husband. Over time, the name "Lazy Goose" came to embody the characteristics of Art's art and Gail's writing; authentic, heritage, gentle, and a place to escape. As the Lumby book series grew in popularity and Art's paintings gained national acclaim, the couple was flooded with requests for products from Lazy Goose, and lazygooseusa.com was born
